I heard a “pop” on my new 30A outlet at home

The outlet is probably wired for 240V. Test it before plugging in again.

Don't plug anything into that outlet again until it's tested

240 volts instantly damages 120V equipment and is a fire risk to your RV.

The electrician most likely wired it as a 30A 240V dryer-style outlet (two hots). RV 30A service is 120V: one hot, one neutral, one ground.

Test it with a multimeter

  1. Set the meter to AC volts.
  2. With the round ground hole at the top, put the black probe in the ground hole and the red probe in the left slot.
  3. You should read about 120V. Much more than that means the outlet is wrong for an RV.

Anyone can check an electrician’s work this way before plugging in.

A surge protector can’t block this. Surges last milliseconds, and 240V on a 120V outlet is constant.

Did this fix it?
